As I contemplate the three wise men being led by a star to Bethlehem, it reminds me of my “Guiding Star” the constellation called the Southern Cross in the Southern Hemisphere.
While living in the South Pacific Islands of Tonga, I would sit on my boat in the pitch black of night with the brightness of the stars piercing my eyes. The Southern Cross was my guiding light and spoke to me as I thought about goals for my business and life.
Here’s what the Southern Cross said to me: “Listen to the gift I am about to give you, it is not loud, it is a whisper, simple but missed by most. Make your goals SPECIFIC, SIMPLE and easy to remember so you will not lose your direction. I know you have a short attention span so set your goals with a start and end TIME so you will feel that you are making headway. This will keep you encouraged to achieve the next one.
“Accomplishments are so easily forgotten so please TRACK them as you go. I want to help you be successful, not set you up for failure, so make your goals ACHIEVABLE. Find someone to help keep you ACCOUNTABLE. There is a fine line between learning to walk and having faith you can walk well. Choose your accountability partner with care.
Last but not least, when choosing your goals make sure they are REALISTIC and you believe in them. You must believe the goals can be accomplished. Whatever you believe you can achieve. Many a year, my dear friend, I have watched you achieve a large goal only to run to the next without celebration. Remember to create a REWARD system that will be meaningful to all the players on your goal team. My wish for you is as you set your own STAR GOALS you live, love and laugh every day. Do what you do best and have fun doing it. I will do what I do best, shine brightly every night as I watch over you and love you from afar.”
Remember your STAR goals:
•S Simple and Specific
•T Timed and Trackable
•A Achievable and Accountable
•R Realistic and Rewarding
